  • Job Summary
    • Under the direction of the Health Information Management Director, the Oncology Data Specialist shall establish and maintain the ongoing operation of the cancer registry; will identify, abstract, follow and report oncology cases as directed by the CCCR and ACOS; analyze and prepare reports for medical and administrative staff regarding oncology services; disseminate data according to professional ethics and guidelines; ensure cancer registry activities meet the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer standards; is responsible for the HIPAA Accounting of Disclosure of cancer cases reported to the Alabama Cancer Registry; is responsible for the review and detailed abstraction of cancer registry data from electronic medical records in compliance with state and national guidelines; is detail-oriented, committed to high-quality data abstraction, meets both quality and productivity standards, functions well independently, and works well under time constraints to ensure deadlines are met; and assist in the coordination of the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board activities.
  • Education
    • • Individual with knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-O coding, cancer staging, tumor morphology, and histology, basic anatomy/physiology and database management and analytics.
    • • Demonstrates knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • • Must have current Certified Tumor Registrar or Oncology Data Specialist certification.
    • • A minimum of an associate’s degree in Health Information Management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience
    • • 2+ years of recent oncology clinical abstracting experience.
    • • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree or further clinical education.
    • • 1+ years experience in a Cancer Registry OR CTR in Lieu of Experience
    • • Specialized Knowledge: Anatomy/physiology, Medical Terminology
    • • Active ODS-C credential and active membership in the national and/or local cancer registrar association.
    • • Knowledge of specific state-reporting requirements.
    • • Working knowledge of current data collection requirements from all standard setters.
    • • EPIC experience - preferred.
    • • Compliance to productivity/quality standards.
    • • Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings including with colleagues, medical staff, and other departments within the facility.
    • • High-speed internet access and experience with remote access, set-up, and troubleshooting technical issues. Secure home office HIPAA compliant.
  • Licensures, Certifications, and/or Registries
    • Certified Tumor Registrar or ODS-C
