In upholding the goal of maintaining and improving patients’ academic status, increasing high school graduation rates, and promoting independence within the pediatric seriously ill population. The Life Skills and Education Coordinator supports the educational, vocational, and self-determination vision that Children’s Harbor has for seriously ill children and their families. The coordinator is responsible for successful program development including planning and implementing an educational program that is established on evidence based practice. The position also functions as a support and resource to students and their families, staff, and the medical team; works effectively with patients/students of all illnesses and disabilities, parents, staff, medical team members, employers and professionals in a variety of educational and vocational institutions; organizes, maintains, and coordinates a center of continuous learning and provides a wide variety of educational, career, and independent living opportunities; communicates and collaborates with patients/students, parents and community representatives concerning high school achievement, career planning, and post-secondary goals. The coordinator also provides social skills training and coaching to assist with managing social challenges related to transition and adjustment to change.  As described in the job title, the position has three primary foci:

Education

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, administration, or Science.

  • Five (5) years of experience as a teacher or professional work in one of the above fields.
  • Two (2) years minimum experience of successful project management and/or program development
  • Minimum of three (3) years working closely with professional partnerships and collaborations.
  • Familiarity with district, state, national and federal educational systems, laws, and guidelines and college admissions process, including standardized tests, application process, etc.

Certifications, and/or Registries

  • Formal education credentials, professional training and certification and evidence of State of Alabama motor vehicle driving license are required.
